Holiday Shoppers Tracked By Their Cell Phones

Posted on: November 26, 2011

Apps Gadgets ETC has recently learned that two shopping malls: one in Richmond, Virginia (Short Pump Town center) and one in Temecula, California (Promenade Temecula Mall) are tracking all of their shoppers with cell phones this holiday season.

They’re both collecting data on which stores you’re shopping in and your particular paths for doing it. Malls across the United States have  been tracking shoppers habits for many years, but now they have the technology to do it through cell phone usage. However, the personal data from the cell phones is not being recorded. The malls just want to see the typical shopping habits and paths of today’s shoppers.

This new Foot Path technology system tracks the cell phones positioning and movements inside the mall. Now stores will be able to capture and use this new shopping intelligence data to better serve their customers.

What do you think of this new way of tracking your shopping habits? Do you believe it will be helpful or harmful to consumers?
