Facebook Testing Discount Deals – Taking On Groupon

Posted on: April 26, 2011

Facebook, the largest social media website, now boasts a membership of over 600 million people with millions more flocking to the site every week. Their membership number continues to grow at an incredible pace. However, there’s another website that’s garnered lots of attention lately too,  Groupon is a discount deal website that offers local discount coupons and deals to people in major cities around the United States. According to Compete, Groupon had approximately 2.4 million unique visitors around this time last year. As of March 2011, Groupon’s web traffic has jumped to a staggering 22 million unique visitors.

Meanwhile, Google has been closely monitoring Groupon’s swift rise in popularity.  Google really liked what they saw and recently offered to buy Groupon for a whopping $6 billion dollars. Amazingly, Groupon said no because their goal is to have a $25 billion dollar public offering and raise the value of their company even more.

So, in the middle of all this action, Facebook has been keeping a close ear to the ground and wants a piece of the deal action as well. This week Facebook launched a Discount Deals test in several major cities around the country. The cities include: Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco, with many more to come.

According to several sources, the discount deals business is a very lucrative one in which each deal site keeps about 50% of the revenue. Hey, that’s a nice haul. You have to give Facebook a lot of credit on this one. When they see a trend happening, they’re quick to get a piece of the pie.
