Apple’s iPad 2 vs Motorola’s Xoom

Posted on: April 1, 2011

Now that people have gotten a chance to try out both tablets, lots of comments and suggestions are beginning to flow into message boards and blogs everywhere. Here are some of the topics of discussion:

1. Ports-  The one area that iPad fans were hoping to see in the iPad 2 was either a USB or a micro SD port. Either one would have brought more versatility to the iPad 2. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be. Happily, Xoom owners do have Micro USB and HDMI out connections. Someone at Motorola made a very smart decision.

2. Camera- While both tablets have similar cameras, some people are giving the edge to Xoom. Many state that the resolution in iPad 2’s camera is slightly less than the Xoom. It might not matter to the average consumer, but there is a difference. Plus, the Xoom has a flash and the iPad 2 does not.

3. Physical Attributes- At first glance both tablets look great. Pick up the iPad 2 and then pick up the Xoom and you’ll feel and see a big difference. The iPad 2 scores big in this area because it’s lighter in weight and sleeker to the touch.

4. Battery Life- According to Consumer Reports, their testing showed the iPad 2 outlasted the Xoom by several hours. The iPad 2 battery actually lasted a whopping 12 hours. That’s a big thumbs up for Apple!

5. Price- Okay. It is true that the iPad 2 starts at $499 for their WiFi version whereas the Xoom is $799. Wait just a second. There’s a big difference here. You need to make this a better comparison. The 32GB version of the iPad 2 is $729 and the Xoom (32GB) is $799. This is where people really need to compare apples to apples. Pun intended! Apple wins this battle by $70.

If you own an iPad 2 or a Xoom, I’d love to hear about your experiences with your new tablet. Your feedback is very useful.

Thank you!
